The Mine.

"All of the men in this pit were part jig-saw.  Some maimed by explosion, others by the cruelties of civil war.  Some of those that appeared whole were the most disfigured; their insides mere fragments of the hopeful boys who had crawled-in hand over fist many years ago. Into the belly of Sierre Leone's deepest diamond mines.  Linked at the ankles by irons and a collective cloud of disappointment, we descended into the dark like a group of Brits traversing Abbey Road.

Given the high-mortality rate of his field of work, the man shackled beside me had seen several lifetimes.  For a man with only five fingers, he was surprisingly adept with a shovel.  Wistfully, he recounted how as a younger man, one who still possessed both arms and a sense of ambition, he had spent his youth knee-deep in a diamond mine with the hopes that he would one day afford an engagement ring of his own.  The pursuit of that fabled stone would ultimately cost him half a limb & the hand of a woman who wanted a whole man to claim her as his bride.

He looked at my palms.  Soft, manicured and marred only by the sort of grotesque bruising one receives from over-aggressive smartphone usage.

'They will not stay like that for long, Mr. Jones.' he said.
'Years from now, if you are lucky enough to still have both of your hands, you will find them wilted from carrying the weight of the world and unable to be washed clean of the blood of all the boys who have died for someone else's diamonds in this mine.'

We dug in unison.  Our silhouette was a hulking squid enveloped by the ink that smothered everything around us.  Occasionally, small stones would shine at our feet like distant stars whispering of their now-forgotten deaths.  We wrestled the earth for treasures buried beneath us, because it was easier than wrestling the despair buried inside."
