The Pit.

In Ibadan, Nigeria. I had only been a guest at Alhaji Obaniyi's Old Bodija estate for 3 nights when I found myself forcibly thrown into a 9-foot tall pit and set upon by a pack of rabid hounds.  It was just before lunch.  I could smell a hint of fried plantains drifting from a faraway kitchen.  Not to be outdone, the hounds gritted their teeth and made it apparent that they could smell my fear.

Calling out from the pit, I suggested that perhaps the Alhaji was overreacting, and that a minor discrepancy to the tune of a few thousand Naira in missing payment was a mere pittance between fabric-dealing friends. He was not amused, and neither were his doberman pinschers. Their jaws tore at my sleeves, as if they'd been waiting their whole lives to find out what a wool/cashmere fabric blend tasted like.

From the surface, the Alhaji and his henchmen howled like hyenas as the cerberus inched me back against the wall. "Any last requests, Oga Jones?' he asked. I fumbled nervously in the chest-pocket of my double-breasted jacket for my address book; unsure of whether i should call-in an air-strike or ring my tailor for alterations. As their frothing maws drew closer to The Trotter, the choice became clear."
