A Long Drive.

"In Paris, France. It's not often that one finds himself sharing a ride with a priest, an arms-dealer, and a one-handed sushi chef.  I was regaling them with tales of the philandering tailor who had conjured this Shetland wool sport jacket when the IED exploded under us.  Mid-air, it occurred to me that I would likely be the least interesting detail of the ensuing obituary.

The smoke billowed around us as we spilled from the wreckage like a box of half-lit matches littering the narrow streets of le Marais. As we waited to see what death would look like, I mummified my face in the jacket's arms to block out the noxious grey. Admittedly, I resembled a flu-ridden passenger on Tokyo transit, but this was one of those rare moments, where self-preservation trumped appearance.

It saddened me that I would never again hear a mademoiselle gasp with surprise at the gentle feel of this jacket as she nuzzled against my neck. Indeed, the Shetland-wool proved less resilient than I would have hoped against a barrage of bullets that left one of the jacket's roped shoulders wet with crimson. Nevertheless, I was comforted by the notion that wearing the Dumilé would make for a warm and cozy exit to a place with no encores.

The priest was busy in prayer. The arms-dealer had moved on to more fiery pastures. The one-handed chef was having considerable difficulty handling a shot-gun. Through the haze, four dark silhouettes drew closer, and a voice screamed: "Ton heure est venue, sale voleur de tissu!" I realized then, that it was going to be a longer day than I'd planned for. Or, on the other hand, a much shorter one."
